KARACHI Reuter: Benazir Bhutto, daughter of executed former Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Pakistan’s most prominent opposition leader, gave birth to a son on Wednesday, her mother announced.

The birth took place eight weeks before elections in which her Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) is one of the favourite.

The announcement by Nusrat Bhutto ended months of speculation about when the child, her first, was due. Neither Bhutto nor her household would say when it was expected but Press speculation had centered on November.

Some PPP leaders had accused the late President Mohammad ZiaulHaq, Bhutto’s arch foe, of deliberately calling elections for November so that the 35 year old opposition leader would be unable to campaign actively.
