NEW DELHI: The recent utterances and actions of Pakistani leaders have not helped in reducing tensions between India and Pakistan the Prime Minister Narasimha Rao said.
Talking to the ANP leader Wali Khan who called on him Narasimha Rao pointed out that it was necessary for the Pakistan government to send appropriate signals to the people in both countries that it wanted a meaningful dialogue with India.
Relations between the two counties have touched a new low since the recent torture and expulsion of a senior Indian diplomat by the authorities in Islamabad resulting in the cancellation of the scheduled sixth round of Foreign Sectary level talks.
There are no indications so far that the breakfast meeting between: Rao and the Pakistan Premier Nawaz Sharief in Rio de Janeiro have been called off. The two leaders are slated to meet on June 13 snatching time for bilateral discussions in the midst of the earth Summit.
Diplomatic observers feel that this meeting could help in reducing the tensions that has crept in as this would be the first high level contact since the Mittal episode.
Recently Pakistan proposed a code of diplomatic conduct which is being examined by the government.
