NEW DELHI: Ahmed Patel, a Congress leader from the West Indian state of Gujarat, resigned from the Congress-I Working Committee (CWC).
In a letter to the Congress-I president and Prime Minister P.V Narasimha Rao, Patel said he was quitting as no woman or person from the backward caste was elected to the highest policy making body of the party,
Patel was among the 10 persons elected to the CWC Thursday at the plenary session of the All India Congress Committee at Rajiv Nagar.
Ahmed Patel is the second person to resign from CWC. On Friday, jitendra Prasad had resigned from the CWC stating the same reason,
The resignations follow remarks of the party president Narasimha Rao at the concluding session of the plenum held 1st week, which he was disappointed over the failure of party colleagues to elect woman of a person from the backward caste to the CWC.
