The Punjab government proposes to issue 1000 permits for plying minibuses in the state. The question of denationalization of the passenger road transport is being considered by a committee headed by the finance minister.

The Lok Sabha has unanimously passed a constitution amendment bill (54th amendment) seeking to increase the salaries of the Chief Justice and Judges of the Supreme Court and those of the High Courts, the monthly salary of the Chief Justice of India and of the Judges has been raised to 10,000 rupees and 9,000 rupees per month respectively and that of the Chief Justice and Judges of the High Courts to 9,000 rupees and 8,000 rupees.

At present the monthly salary of the Chief Justice of India is 5,000 rupees and of Judges of the Supreme Court 4,000 rupees and of the Chief Judges of the High Court is 4,000 rupees and of judges of a High Court 3,500 rupees only.

Mr. P. Upendra (Telegu Desam) pleaded in parliament for the deletion of Article 249 because it erodes the powers of the States, He said that the parliament should not pass the resolution assuming special powers invoking article 249 Until the State Assembly had passed the same by a two thirds majority.

 The pound sterling has become costlier by 15 paise following a downward revision of the rupee by 0.8%. The new middle rate now works out to Rs, 18,70 per pound corresponding to the buying and selling rates at R. 18,66 and Rs 18.74 respectively.

 The Supreme Court as held that no person can be forced to join in the singing of the national anthem, if he has genuine, conscientious religious objection.

A project to manufacture 3000 tons of Artic acid and acetic anhydride and 300 tons of ethyle acclate per annum is to be set up in Punjab at a cost of Rs. 5 crores at Barnala to go into production in 15 months providing employment to 200 persons.
