NEW DELHI(PT!): Leprosy can be cured in just one month using two new antibiotics that are now in experimental stage, a French Scientist has announced.
Clinical trials carried out in India, Philippines, Vietnam, Nigeria, Mali, Uganda and Brazil have given “extremely positive” results, according to Prof. Jacques Grosset of the Pitie-Salpetriere hospital in France who is the director of the World Health Organization (WHO) research group for Leprosy.
The new drugs pre limacine and of loxacine belonging to the “quinolones” family are broad spectrum antibiotics. Trials with these antibiotics began about two years ago.
“We have never been as enthusiastic because it now appears to be possible to completely eradicate this disease from the planet,” Prof Grosset said.
