NEW DELHI(PTI): An Indian born scientist now working in Denmark has developed a novel polymer that will revolutionize data storage for computers by boosting disc storage capacity hundreds of times.

The new polymer developed by Dr P.S.Ramanujam and his col leagues at Denmark’s Riso research center will allow the use of laser light for optical storage of data instead of the conventional magnetic storage.

A single square centimeter of the polymer can store information from 60,000 standard A4 size

ages of paper.

Conventional magnetic data storage discs can hold information from only 10 pages.

The new polymer can store both text and pictures. The information is stored with the help of blue laser light, read with red laser light, and erased or deleted with heat.

Its picture storage potential has been described by scientists as “an added bonus” since ordinary magnetic storage of pictures re quires enormous storage space.

Dr.Ramanujam, born in Vellore and now a laser physicist at Riso’s department of optics and fluid dynamics, believes the polymer is ‘strong and mechanically stable.
