SOLAPUR: The joint funeral pyre of Dhunda Maharaj Degalurkar prominent leader of Warakari sect in Maharashtra and his wife Krishnabai was lit on January 24 on the banks of Chandrabhaga River in Pandharpur by their eldest son Bhanudas Maharaj.
Hundreds of members of the Warkari sect rushed to Pandhaspur to pay last respects to the 87-yr-old Maharaj an authority on “Dnaneshwari” when they heard of his death on Thursday. His wife died the same evening.
Thousands of people lined the streets to catch a last glimpse of the Maharaj as the funeral procession led by “Didndyas” singing “Bhajans” (devotional songs) wound its way to the banks of the Chandrabhaga
HYDERABAD: Sharan Basappa Appa Priest of the Sharan Basappa temple at Gulbarga and Syed Shah Serves Mohammad-ul-Hussaini Sajjada Nashinf Dargah Hazrat Khwaja Bandenawaz (Gulbarga) were felicitated here at function organized by the all India Sufi conference on January 24.
Earlier they were conferred honorary doctorate by Gulbarga University in recognition of their services in the field of education.

MACHILIPATNAM: Two Burmse fishermen were rescued by Indian fishermen from sea near Hamsaladeevi about 60 kms from Kakinada on January 25.
According to police the fishermen set out for fishing in the sea on November 30 last with the permission of Burma fisheries department in a mechanized boat. After 10 days of fishing five pirates of Burma attacked the fisher men and took away the motor of the boat. The injured fishermen then sailed in the boat without motor for nearly 55 days and reached near Hamsaladeevi.
The fishermen who were handed over to the Machilipatnam port officer were provided with food and other facilities.

BOMBAY: About 20 Indian companies manufacturing plastic machinery industrial products and plastic technical parts will participate in the “K92″ international trade fair for plastics and rubber to be held at Dusseldorf (Germany) between October 29 and [November 5 this year.

BOMBAY: The customs excise and gold (control) appellate tribunal on January 29 reduced the fine of Rs five lakh imposed by the additional collector of customs(P) Bombay on Air India to Rs 1000 while admonishing it for its in ability in preventing the shipment of 125 kgs of Hishish as manifested cargo in 1986.
The tribunal members said they were reducing the fine as they were convinced that air India did not have a hand in the illegal export of Hashish.
The technical member R Jayaraman and judicial member P K Desai observed that Air India should look into the present system for identifying loop-holes and taking proper steps top servant such lapses in the future.
