NEW DELHI: Rajya Sabha members on Dec.10 unanimously condemned the forced marriage of a 16yearold girl from Hyderabad to a Sandi national and demanded that the government undertake some measures to see that such incidents did not recur in future.
The issue was raised during zero hour by Mrs Jayanti Natarajan (Congress) who said the sale of the minor girl for Rs’20,000 by her parents was an act of “national shame”.
She pointed out that this was not the first case of its kind, coming close on the heels of the Ameena episode. Stating that it was the poverty of the parent’s which forced them to sell their daughters. Natarajan urged the government to make a statement in the House and spell out how it planned to deal with such incidents.
