MOSCOW, Sept 23, Reuter: The Soviet news agency tass on Friday denounced as “a deliberate lie,” a claim by Afghan rebels that they had captured the town of Paghman west of Kabul.
A spokesman for the JamiatIIslami rebel group said in Islamabad on Thursday that the guerrillas seized Paghman on Monday after two weeks of fierce fighting.
“Even a superficial checkup shows that this is a deliberate lie, being absolutely at variance with reality,” Tass said, citing “competent soviet military circles.”
It said Afghan Government troops had killed 300 rebels and seized large quantities of weapons in “operations to liquidate armed opposition factions” in Paghman ‘over the past two weeks.
