NEW DELHI: About 70 Kashmiri migrants were rounded up by the police from outside the Prime Minister’s residence for causing inconvenience to public.

An official spokesman said here that about 400 migrants reached Prime Minister VP Singh’s residence, but were told that he was in his office.

A six member delegation went to his office and insisted that he come to his Lodhi Road residence to meet the assembled migrants and hear their grievances. Mr. Singh said that he was busy just then and would meet the migrants later.

The spokesman said that the delegation members were apparently dissatisfied with Mr. Singh’s reply and squatted outside the residence of the prime minister refusing to disperse.

They were then rounded up and taken to Mandir Marg police station.

A spokesman for the Kashmir migrant’s action committee alleged that the police resorted to Lathi charge, injuring at least seven persons.

The police denied the charge and said the migrants broke the cordon and pitched a tent outside the prime minister’s house causing inconvenience to public.
