ISLAMABAD, Reuter: ‘Afghanistan said today its troops had launched successful operations against Moslem rebels in five provinces, while a guerrilla group said it had taken a government Garrison near the Soviet border.

The official Bakhtar news agency, monitored in Islamabad, said troops killed or captured a large number of rebels in western Ghor and Herat provinces and Zabul in the south,

It said arms captured from the western-backed rebels included anti-tank mines, heavy machine- guns and mortar shells. Bakhtar did not say when the operations took place.

It was the first time in more than a month that Kabul had reported fighting in Herat near the Iranian border. The Afghan and Soviet media reported that the city of Herat was recaptured from the rebels in mid-July.
