AMRITSAR: Charanjit Singh Channi, a small-time militant, would have found it too difficult to surrender had a local journalist not arranged it for him.
At a Press conference called by Majitha SSP R.S. Khatra last week Channi told reporters that he had paid Rs 40,000 to the journalist before his surrender in 1992. The journalist, he said, had taken money on the pretext that it would be given to a police officer. Channi also arranged to have a cordless telephone installed at the journalist’s house, as a part of the deal.
The journalist, who was present at the Press conference, said nothing about the money, but admitted that the cordless phone was given to him. Channi and his former accomplice Sartaj Singh were presented to reporters after a newspaper report that the police had been bribed to arrange the surrender.
