LONDON: Jahangir Khan wrote himself into history when he won the British Open Squash championship men’s title for a ninth consecutive time here at the packed Wembley Conference Centre.
His straight games96, 10-8, 9-1 victory over the fifth seed Rodney Martin of Australia helped him to break Aussie Geoff Hunt’s record of eight wins.
How much a record ninth win meant for Jahangir was shown by the fact his father Roshan Khan had traveled to England for the first time since he himself won the championship in 1957.
Roshan’s presence was a source of reassurance to Jahangir who no longer had his cousin Rehmat Khan as coach and counselor.
Jahangir was sharp, fast and totally clinical as he mercilessly worked the striving and seething Rodney round the court.
Rodney who had on Sunday surprised the world champion Jansher Khan in four games found himself under tremendous pressure from Jahangir whose length hitting was meticulous and front court play incisive.
