HAVANA, Nov 26, Reuter: The Indian firm cimmco Ltd will build a coconut processing factory in Cuba costing nearly four million dollars. Its President D.K. Goyal told a news conference here on Friday night. The plant will go on stream in June 1990 and its products will include edible oil and fiber to make carpets, curtains and mattresses, Goyal said.
Construction is due to start on January 19 in the port city of Baracoa in Eastern Cuba. Cimmco will supply equipment, machinery and technical support for two years after completion of the plant.
Cimmco is a fully-owned subsidiary of the Birla conglonerate, India’s second biggest family owned business, a major textile and cement producer.
Birla has carried out two previous projects in Cuba, restarting a textile plant and modernizing a rayon plant.
