NEW DELHI, India: Four gunmen killed a Hindu city councilman and the brother of a colleague at their homes Thursday and the army was placed on alert in the Indian capital, officials said.
Police said they found a bomb in a loaded passenger train in the main railway terminal in New Delhi, and a senior intelligence official said 14 Sikhs have arrived here from Canada, Britain and Pakistan to launch attacks.
Enraged Hindu mobs stoned city buses and deflated tires in protest against the killings and discovery of the bomb. At least 50 buses were damaged in the rioting. No casualties were reported:
All schools were ordered closed today and Saturday as a security measure and the city government banned public assembly to prevent Hindu riots in revenge for the murders.
The shooting victims were identified as City Councilman Hansraj Sethi, 54, a member of the Hindu dominated Indian People’s Party, and Sudarshan Munjal, 27, brother of another City Council member also belonging to the party.
Police said the gunmen apparently were intending to kill Councilman Balwant Rai Munjal but
