NEW DELHK(PTI): India will host the sixth women’s World Cup for Cricket in December 1997, according to officials here on August 2.
This was decided by International Women’s Cricket Council (WCC) at Guildford, England, On July 31 setting aside a similar Request by New Zealand Women’s Cricket Association.
India’s claim was supported by Australia, England, Ireland and West Indies, according to Anuradha Dutt, secretary of the Women’s Cricket Association of India (WECI), Dutt attended the meeting on behalf of WCCI. It was also decided that the schedule for the 1997 World Cup will be drawn in 1995 by a subcommittee specially formed for this purpose by the nine member countries, including south Africa which could not participate in the recent world cup.
Dutt also said that it was agreed on principle that the subcommittee will go into details like employing umpires with sufficient first class match experience.
Most countries participating in the Just world cup felt that the umpiring aspect needed a fresh look, Dutt added.
The countries were of the opinion that rules governing the world cup matches should be changed as they are outdated.
IWCC will form a steering committee to look into the organizational aspects control over the Cricket associations of different counties, its activities and generation of funds, she said.
