DHAKA, Reuter; Half centuries from Navjot Sidhu and Captain Dilip Vengsarkar comfortably steered India to a six Wicket victory over holders Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup Cricket final on Friday
Sri Lanka made 176 all out in 43.2 overs after four of their top batsmen were run out India reached 180 for four in 37.4 overs
Sidhu hammered three huge sixes and four fours in his personal contribution of 76 and won the man-of-the-match award.
Joined by Vengsarkar the third wicket partnership put on 86 to leave the Indians in sight of victory
On 155, off spinner Gunawardene bowled Sidhu and then Mohammed Azharuddin was out from the first ball he received from Gunawardene.
But Vengsarkar with an unbeaten 50 and Kapil Dey (12 not out) saw India home
Earlier, Roshan Mahanama and Brendon Kuruppu gave the Sri Lankans a good start with an opening partnership of 53 runs. But then the collapse started.
Duleep Mendis played a defiant innings of 36, but the run-outs cost Sri Lanka dearly and a three for 12 burst by Srikkanth Was the final straw.
