CHANDIGARH: Gunmen shot down five people and security forces nabbed an equal number of militants in Punjab during the past 24 hours.

A bullet-ridden body of a Patwari, identified as Kewal Krishan, was recovered from Butter village in Ferozepur district on Friday.

An unspecified number of gunmen waylaid Raj Mohinder Singh a panchayat member and his wife Baljit Kaur, in Ferozepur district and opened fire, killing them on the spot on Thursday night.

The couples, on their way to their home village Butter, were attacked when they came near the village bus stand.

In another incident gunmen shot down Santokh Singh at Rampura village in the Majitha police district (Amritsar) on Thursday night.

In yet, another incident, Chanan Singh Masih was shot dead at Kuhali village in Batala police district (Gurdaspur).

A top militant identified as Amarjit Singh, who carried a reward of Rs 25,000 on his head was arrested by Kapurthala police after an encounter on Thursday night. A 38 revolver and a stolen scooter were recovered from him. His accomplices escaped.

Gurdaspur district police chief, P.M. Das, on Friday said a harbored Dilbagh Singh alias Bagga, was arrested by the Kahnuwan police on Thursday night and a handgrenade recovered from him.

He was suspected of giving shelters to the Panthic Committee member, Wasan Singh, Zaffarwal, and Lakhwinder Singh alias Lakha, of the outlawed Khalistan Commando Force.

Dhariwal police arrested a militant identified as Jasbir Singh from his village Peer De Sein. Dinnanagar police arrested two Pakistanis on Thursday night from the border village of Shahpur Agwan. They were identified as Bashir Sahi and Akbar Hayat.

Bashir Sahi is the elder brother of the Pakistani national who was found linked with the spy Balwinder Singh arrested in June,
