CHANDIGARH: The government of the northern Indian state of Punjab Wednesday denied Press reports saying army had been deployed in the state.

An official spokesman here clarified that army units were al- ready there in their respective cantonments for routine duties.

He said army units could be requisitioned under special circumstances as and when it was considered necessary to assist the civil administration to effectively maintain law and order.
