NEW DELHI, India, June 20, Reuter: At least 46 people were rushed to hospital in Meerut in northern India today after they were affected by chloride gas that leaked from a water tank, the Press Trust of India (PTI) news agency reported.
PTI said the gas leaked early this morning from the tank in a military camp in the city. All 46 people, including women and children, were given first aid and allowed to go home.
No other details were immediately available.
More than 2.000 people were killed in the central Indian city of Bhopal in December, 1984, when Methyl Isocyanate gas leaked from a plant of the Union Carbide Corporation.
More than 500,000 claimants are demanding three billion dollars in compensation from the U.S. company. The case is being heard by an Indian judge in Bhopal.
