NEW DELHI: The federal cabinet has delayed the entry of foreign newspapers into the country indefinitely, according to the Economic Ties.
A proposal to amend a decision that prohibits entry of foreign newspapers and publications into the country has been deferred by the government.
Official sources said the proposal to allow foreign newspapers in the Indian market came up for consideration at a recent Cabinet meeting. However, the cabinet deferred any decision on the proposal,
While no definite date has been given for clearing the proposal, it is understood that the proposal, mooted jointly by union finance ministry and information and broadcasting ministry, is quite unlikely to be taken up by the cabinet before the assembly elections in the four states in November Senior government sources said that a large number of foreign newspapers were keen 10 come 10 India with equity participation and in collaborations with their Indian counterparts.
The Financial Times, Time Magazine, Wall Street Journal, Elle Group of France, Paul Mann group have already submitted their proposals for tie ups with Indian publishing houses. Two separate Joint venture proposals, each from the New York Times and the guardian, arc also said to have been worked out.
The information and broadcasting ministry which has opposing foreign newspapers entry, is favoring the move now, Finance Ministry, too, is keen to allow them.
