ISLAMABAD: Young girls from India, Nepal, Sri Lanka and other neighbouring countries are being smuggled into Pakistan and forced into prosecution, a human rights activist has stated.

Ansar Burney, chairman of the Ansar Burney welfare trust, has in a letter to the interior ministry stated that Maldives, were sold at exorbitant rates before being induced into the flesh trade.

Some of these girls had falled victims to these unscrupulous persons, who married them and struck deals after landing in Pakistan.

On detection, the girls were booked under the foreigners act and the Hudood ordinance, and were now languishing in jails, he said.

In response to Burney’s letter, the federal government has set up a two member committee to investigate such cases and suggest measures for the girl’s release.

Headed by Ansar Burney, the committee also has Asma Jehangir, an advocate as its other member.

The interior ministry has directed the inspector generals of all the four provinces to furnish copies of FIRS of such cases, which reportedly run into hundreds.
