BANGALORE: A macabre incident of setting after a house, allegedly by members on a family in retaliation to a gruesome murder of their relative, claimed 13 lives, besides causing bums to six others at Kakinaki village in the southern Indian Karnataka state’s Bijapur district Saturday.
Police here said a long pending land dispute between the families of Sharnappa and Laxman led to the murder of the latter, allegedly by the former with the help of his supporters Saturday morning.
Enraged by the murder, Laxman’s brother, accompanied by his supporters, set on fire Sharnappa’s house, in which ten people were roasted alive on the spot while three others succumbed to injuries at hospital. The condition of those injured was stated to be precarious, police said.
Including the murder of Laxman, 14 persons have lost their lives in the family vendetta.
Police pickets had been posted in the village as a precautionary measure and arrangements had been made to apprehend the culprits, police added.
