Calcutta (PTI): The British High Commissioner in India Sir Nicholas Fenn said here Saturday India and Britain were all set to sign an extradition treaty and another on the mutual confiscation of assets of terrorists and smugglers to combat terrorism and drug menace facing the two countries.
“The treaties he said had already been drafted and would be signed in early May. Ata press conference here Sir Nicholas said the British Government was sharing a bitter experience with India and he believed a threat like terrorism should be eliminated to ensure democratic and human rights safeguards.
On the nuclear non-proliferation treaty (NPT) Sir Nicholas said that his country was not pressuring India but that his country would like to see the sub-continent as a zone of peace. Describing his governments stand on the issue as rigidly strong Sir Nicholas said they were approaching China France South Africa and even: Pakistan in this regard.
The British envoy refuted the allegation that his country was giving shelter and financial assistance to terrorists in Punjab and. Jammu and Kashmir. In case there were terrorists in U.K his country would deal with the situation in accordance with the law of the land he said. On Pakistani support to militants in Punjab and Kashmir he said the problem could be resolved through bilateral talks on basis of the Shimla agreement it’s never the business of the: British Government to sort out a solution in this regard he said.
