LONDON: Graham Gooch continued his unbeaten record as England Captain as his side drew the third test against India to win the test series 1-0,
David Gower, who came to the field at the fall of Gooch’s wicket on Monday, compiled a high quality century to see England coast to safety after they were asked to follow on, 266 runs behind the Indian score,
Gower, a former captain, remained unbeaten on 157 when the play was called off after England declared their second innings at 477 for four. This is his second century in 38 innings.
Vice-captain Allan Lamb made a good ’52 to give firm support to Gower before he was consumed by Kapil Dev. The other not out batsman was Robin ‘Smith who made seven.
For India, Kapil Dev was the most successful bowler who claimed two wickets for 66 runs. Atul Wassan and Narendra Hirwani got one each at the cost of 84 and 137 runs respectively.
England surged ahead in the three test series with a commanding win in the first test at lords by a margin of 247 runs.
The second test at old Trafford was also dominated by England though it finally ended in a draw.
With Tuesday’s win, England completed their first unbeaten home summer since 1979.
Earlier in the year, England had scored a 10 win over New Zealand.
