WARSAW , Jan 7, Reuter: England’s hopes of qualifying for the 1990 World Cup finals in Italy were enhanced on Thursday when they, Poland, Sweden and Al-bania agreed on a provisional schedule for their European group two F.
England, fearing a summer fixture with Sweden, an autumn trip to Albania or any fixture during September, emerged from a friendly three hour meeting with all their hopes fulfilled. England hoped to avoid Sweden in the summer because it is the English close season and Albania in the autumn because of the heat. In recent years, England have suffered several humiliating or heavy defeats in September.
“I think everyone is very satisfied with what has happened”, said English Football Association Secretary Ted Croker, “and I think we will qualify for the world cup finals”,
MADRAS, India: India recovered from a poor start to reach 102 for three at lunch on the first day of the fourth and final test against West Indies.
Opener Arun Lal, with an unbeaten 46, and Mohammed Azharuddin, 18 not out, steadied the innings after India had lost their first three wickets for 62.
