NEW DELHI: Deputy Prime Minister Devi Lal dismissed as absurd a demand to change Chandra Shekhar’s leadership of the Janata Dal (S) Parliamentary party.
We cannot have a better leader than him he said.
Devi Lal said we have full faith in him and he will continue to be our leader. He was reacting to a demand by a party leader Chand Ram.
Chand Ram a close associate of Devi Lal had urged the president Mr Venkatraman to avoid a mid-term poll and had said instead of Chandra Shekhar Devi Lal could head a new government.
Talking to PTI Devi Lal said most of the members of Parliament were against having a fresh poll but there was no option.
Mr Devil Lal who is Janata Dal (S) president said his party too did not want elections but the situation had come to such a pass that there is no other way.
Meanwhile Janata Dal (S) spokesman Satya Prakash Malavia categorically ruled out any change either in the parliamentary party leadership or the president ship of the JD(S).
Mr Malaviya told newsmen that Chandra Shekhar would continue to be the leader of the parliamentary party and Mr Devi Lal the party president.
It is most unfortunate and improper that a few MPs (of the party) have sought a change in the leadership of the parliamentary party in place of Chandra Shekhar he said.
He felt that if these MPs had some grievance they could have raised the matter at the meeting of the parliamentary party which was the proper forum
