NEW DELHI (PTI): A Chinese herb remedy for Malaria has been found to reduce death rate to one third as compared to Quinine the World Health Organization (WHO) reports.
The latest WHO report contained results of a scientific study on multi-drug resistant Maulana in Thailand. The drug also helped reduce Maluria mortality by a factor of five in Vietnam since 1991.
The two-year trial covering 97 patients with severe and complicated multi-drug resistant Malaria on the border of Thailand and conducted by the
Bangkok and supported by the WHO World Bank of United Nations Development Program
(UNDP) Results analyses in March this year showed that intra-muscular injections of Artemether a derivative of extracts of the Chinese herb Artemisia Annua has saved the lives of 87% of patients with Severe Malaria compared with intravenous Quinine the standard therapy for severe cases which saved only 64%. With Quinine 18 of the 50 patients died while with Anemether only 6 out of 47 died.
WHO director general Dr. Hiroshi Nakajima said the scientific demonstration old Chinese medicine in an area where Maulana is so resistant to other drugs is a dramatic step forward for health.
