BEIJING (PTI): China has lodged protest with France against last month’s meeting in Paris between President Francois Mitterrand and Tibetan Religious leader, the Dalai Lama, an official spokesman stated Nov.25.
The Dalai Lama has been living abroad fora long time and leading activities aimed at “splitting the Motherland,” foreign ministry spokeswoman Fan Huijuan said during a news briefing.
The French leader’s meeting with the Dalai Lama constituted an “interference in the Internal Affairs” of China, she said, noting that China had made ‘representations’ and lodged a protest.
The reaction to the Mitterrand Dalai Lama meeting was milder than expected and delayed longer than on previous occasions when government leaders met the Tibetan leader.
Although the meeting took place on Nov.16, the French Charge D’ Affaires here was called in on Monday to receive China’s protest.
