CHANDIGARH: Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh has once again started lobbying about the outstanding problems of the state.

He had an hour-long meeting with Prime Minister P. V, Narasimha Rao in Delhi July 19, trying to impress upon him the need to give priority to the state’s demands.

According to those close to him, Beant Singh impressed upon the need to transfer Chandigarh to Punjab and find an amicable solution to the river waters dispute. He also took up the issue of according second language status to Punjabi in the neighboring states. On the fiscal side, he pressed Rao in waive Special term loan reiterating that the financial stability of Punjab is a way to fight the battle against the militants. He is learned to have taken strong exception to the reported statement of his Haryana counterpart Bhajan Lal that he was instrumental in challenging the transfer of Chandigarh to Punjab, Bhajan Lal had referred to the transfer of Chandigarh at a meet the Press program here.
