BANGALORE: Election to the Jayanagar Assembly constituency here, the capital of the southern state of Karnataka, has been countermanded following the murder of an independent candidate, PTI reports.
The candidate, Jairaj, was at tacked by four motorcyclists and was found shot dead near Lal Bagh south gate early Tuesday.
Official sources said parliamentary polls in the constituency would, however, be conducted as scheduled.
The former Karnataka urban development minister, M Chan drashekhar, (Janata Dal), K.L.Gangadhara Gowda (Janata Party), Ramalinga Reddy (Cong-1) and eight others were in the fray from the constituency.
This is the second instance of polls being countermanded in Kar nataka. Polling in Mundargi was earlier countermanded following the death of a candidate.
Jayraj was recently released on parole from the central jail here, where he had been intended in connection with a murder attempt. He had sought bail to campaign for the election and was on his way to produce himself at the police station when the attack took place.
