UNION CITY: It was an exciting evening of Bhangra at the Cabello Elementary school of the New Haven Unified School district, Union City. The Indian parents association of the school organized a colorful program of the Punjabi folk dances by young boys and girls to the vibrant beat of the ‘Dhol’ the typical drum used to sound the rhythm of the dance.
The Mayor was the Chief Guest at the function besides the District Asst. Supted of Sports Mrs.Ruth Mcana. The Principal Mr.Brault and the Vice Principal of the School Ms.Mahna were honored by the Punjabi community, A plaque was present to Mr.Robert Garfinkle who was full of appreciation of the efforts of the organizers of the event, He called it a wonderful event” which displayed the diversity of American society and which enriched our culture. He welcomed this type of participation by the community and hoped he would see more of it, the following year.
The Vice Principal of the School, wearing a beautifully embroidered green Punjabi ‘Salvar Kameez’ looked very elegant and graceful. The young artists, were children, were well prepared by Bhai Lal Singh Bhaui, who is a well-known Bhangra artiste. He is a master of the “Dhol” which becomes a charmed instrument in his hands; He gave a special performance from the ‘drum’ which had the audience swinging. The evening culminated in a Bhangra performance by a team from ‘Punjab Kala Kendra® of Lal Singh Bhatti. It was a delightful sequence which was in the true Punjabi tradition and seeing the young men vibrating to the rhythm of the ‘dhol’ one might well have been in Punjab. Dancing to the beats of “Hasda Punjab—Nachda Punjab” the hall of the school overflowed with the sound of music. The function was coordinated by Taranjit Singh Sandhu. Some of the organizers who worked hard to make the function successful were Mr.& Mrs. Jit Singh Bal, Ms. Sita Balventashan and Mr.& Mrs. Bhatia.
