AMRITSAR: Dissident Congress MP Jagmeet Singh Brar, who was taken into custody, was released from the Circuit House here.

Amritsar Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Samant Goel said that as per Mr, Brar’s demands, 58 of his supporters arrested by the police were also let off, however, those who had been remanded to judicial custody have been detained at the Central jail.

 

Earlier, the police lathi charged Brar’s supporters outside the Golden Temple complex and in the process thwarted Brar’s attempt to hold a public rally near the historic Jallianwala Bagh, here.

Brar, a bitter critic of Chief Minister Beant Singh who was expelled from the active membership of the party, was himself taken into custody after a brief scuffle with senior police officers outside the Clock ‘Tower entrance to the temple. The Police also/arrested two truckloads of supporters of the’ dissident leader belonging to the Congress, the Akali Dals and the Bharatiya Kisan Union. It was while Brar was being frisked away that his supporters got unruly and tried to prevent the police officers from taking away their leader. Shouting slogans against Beant Singh, they pushed aside the policemen and rushed towards Brar. The cops, without waiting for orders from their senior police officers, slammed their lath is ruthlessly on the supporters of Brar, Though no serious injuries were inflicted on any of the agitators, a few were seen limping while they were being pushed into waiting police vehicles, Senior police officers, however, termed thelathicharcedeavervimildaecontorces.
