A total of 3386 persons belonging to the five banned organizations have been arrested so far in continued countrywide crackdown.

An official spokesman said 1,165 of the arrested belonged to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) 1104 were from the Viswa Hindu Parisad (VHP) 502 from the Bajrang Dal 492 from the Jamaat-E-Islami Hind and 123 from the Islamic Sewak Sangh (ISS).

These five organizations were banned in the aftermath of the demolition of the 16th century Babri mosque Structure at Ayodhya in the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh by the Right-Wing grouping of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) RSS VHP and Bajrang Dal.

The demolition triggered an avalanche of protests both inside and outside the country. Over two thousand people were killed in India as a fall-out of mosque demolition.

ISS and Jamaat-E-Islami too were banned under the prevention of unlawful activities act 1967 for being communal organizations. The spokesman said as a precautionary step army and security forces had been put on alert in the central state of Madhya Pradesh and north Indian states of Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh ~ the three BJP-ruled states where Presidents rule was imposed Tuesday night.

The president Dr.Shankar Dayal Sharma issued a proclamation sacking Bhartiya Janata Panys three state governments and placed them under the presidents rule after the union cabinet recommended their removal following the Dec.6 Ayodhya developments.

Earlier the Uttar Pradesh state government was sacked on Dec.6. Premier P.V Narasimha Rao met the president late in the night soon after the defence minister Sharad Pawar had obtained the presidential approval for the dismissal. This was the second meeting between the prime minister and the president in the course of the day that witnessed hectic political activity in the Congress party.

The two meetings lasting about 40 minutes came in the wake of the growing demand with the Congress and outside for the dismissal of the three BJP governments.

Opinion at two rounds of cabinet Meeting-one in the morning and another late at night—were unanimous on the dismissal of the BJP governments.

The cabinet’s recommendation to the president was carried by Pawar as the home (interior) minister S.B.Chavan was indisposed and did not attend the cabinet meeting.

Following the dismissal the state assemblies of Madhya Pradesh Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh have been dissolved.

The demand for dismissal of the BJP governments was intensified after the ruling Congress-I working committee almost unanimously asked the federal government to bring the three states under president’s rule on the plea that their chief ministers owed allegiance to the RSS a banned Organization.

A similar plea was made by senior cabinet minister Arjun Singh who had been advocating a hard line against the BJP and cautioning the federal government not to trust the BJP-RSS leaders even before demolition of the disputed structure at Ayodhya.

The move for dismissal was also hastened by the reports received by the cabinet doubting the intentions and capacities of the BJP state governments to enforce the ban on the five communal organizations.
