CALCUTTA (PTI): The Right Wing opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) April 10 called upon all political parties to review Center state relations preserve federal polity and evolve a new economic model to meet the aspirations of developing countries like India.
The BJP wanted the government to take initiative on these two issues and if it failed to do so, the party was willing to take the lead, the party leader, Atal Behari Vajpayee, told a Press conference.
In his introductory remarks, the party president, Dr.Murli Manohar Joshi, said an all Party meeting should be convened to evolve a Strategy for restoration of the four State governments in Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, which were dissolved following the Ayodhya developments.
There was also a strong case for the devolution of more financial powers to the states for healthy Center state relations.
Dr.Joshi said the Congress1 government had no moral right to continue in office in the wake of the Madhya Pradesh high court judgment.
Vajpayee forecast a midterm poll in 1993 itself because of the “political and economic mess” the Narasimha Rao government had led the country into.
The judgment, Dr Joshi said, had raised a very vital issue regarding Center state relationship.
It was, therefore, high time that expressions like “breakdown of the constitutional machinery” and “breakdown of law and order,” were clearly defined and steps taken to prevent misuse of the article, Dr Joshi added.
Dwelling at length on the economic resolution which the executive was discussing, Vajpayee said that the party was totally opposed to the Dunkel draft on agriculture as it went against the interest of Indian farmers.
He however wanted the Indian government to continue the ongoing multilateral trade negotiation in this regard.
