NEW YORK: The Birla family, one of India’s top business houses, is among 271 billionaire businessmen and families listed by the US magazine ‘Forbes’.

The billionaires identified include 99 Americans, 40 Japanese, 38 Germans, 15 Chinese and

79 others including the Birla family in India.

In an interview published in the magazine, 46 year old Aditya Birla, who presides over the ‘cream of the Birla Companies’, said “in competition we thrive.”

The magazine said every year an ‘intriguing pattern’ emerges from the hunt for billionaires.

This year, West Germany, which has half Japan’s population and one quarter of U.S., has created far more billionaires than either Japan or the US.
