PATIALA: Punjab police Chief D.S. Mangat said here last week that the army would be deployed in the state of the eve of the proposed election in February 1992. Mangat said that the idea of army’s deployment did not imply decline in the police morale but was aimed at reinforcing the security forces which were in short supply in Punjab.

 “The police chief said that 98 top militants had been killed during the past nine months. He, however, admitted that the situation in Ludhiana, Sangrur, Tam Taran, Majitha and Patti police districts was quite grim where militants had a dominant position. Two more police balloons were being raised. The police chief promised the enquire into the complaints of journalist Harish Chander of “Morinda and Ranjit Singh of Bhi wanigarh alleging danger to their lives from police “cats”.
