VIJAYAWADA: Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting P. Upendra said that an interim advisory board with five non officials would be set up within a week to oversee the official media function in the country.

Laying the foundation stone for a Rs 200 million television studio building in Vijayawada, in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, Upendra said the board was being set up to bring about immediate changes in the functions of the official media, while the process of legislation and restructuring for “Prasar Bharati” would take its course.

The minister said he was confident that the proposed “Prasar Bharati” (Broadcasting Corporation of India) would come into existence by January 1991.

The Union Minister said that the proposed bill was introduced in the lower house of the Parliament as a “tentative” one after consulting all opposition parties which aimed to make the official medias “impartial and objective” in its functioning.

Stressing the need for an expansion program for Doordarshan and All India Radio, Upendra said the qualitative aspect of these two Medias had to be given more importance.

It was unfortunate that the official Medias had lost confidence of the people in the recent past, he said, adding confidence of the people in the recent past, he said, adding “I am not blaming neither the officials nor the people who utilized it.” The very system was faulty which required immediate correction, he said.
