1831: He worked as a clerk in a store that quickly failed.

1832; He ran for Illinois legislature and was defeated.

1833: He started his own general store and failed.

1834: He was elected to Illinois legislature but lost bids to become both the Speaker and the Elector.

1843: He ran for Congress and lost.

1846: He was elected to Congress but lost his reelection two years later.

1854: He campaigned for the U.S. Senate but was forced to withdraw.

1858: He again ran for the Senate and lost.
