NEW DELHI: The first meeting of the newly elected executive council of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) will be held at the national stadium here on May 16.
B.Sivanthi Adityan, back at the helm of IOA affairs after nearly a year, lost no time in sending out notice for the meeting after taking over as president on Wednesday.
The IOA, whose office-bearers were voted to power in Calcutta on Sunday, has many pressing problems that need immediate tackling.
The foremost among them, and figuring prominently on the agenda, is the holding of the 1st Afro-Asian games here towards the end of this year.
Another matter needing attention is the preparation for participation in the 5th south Asian federation games starting in Colombo on December 22.
The bid for hosting common wealth games is also to be decided upon. The deadline for submission of the bid is January next year.
Punjab was to host the national games in 1989 but failed to do so due to the law and order situation there. Nothing happened last year either,
The IOA will now have to choose between the offers made by Andhra Pradesh, which wants the games as part of the celebration of 400 years of the founding of Hyderabad, and Maharashtra.
The executive council will also consider the report of justice A.D.Koshal on the IOA elections he conducted.
The two former judges of the Supreme court, justice Koshal and justice S. Natarajan, who officiated as the one-man executive of the IOA till Adityan took over May 1, are, in their reports, understood to have recommended some changes in the IOA’s constitution.
The IOA’s executive council will consider them before taking the matter to the general assembly.
