DHAKA (PTI): Bangladesh parliament on Aug.13 rejected the opposition-sponsored no confidence motion against Prime Minister Khaleda Zia’s 11month ministry.
While 168 members voted against the motion, 122 supported it with the 20-member group of fundamentalist, Jamaat-E-Islami abstaining, speaker Sheikh Razzak Ali announced.
This was the first no-confidence motion moved in Bangladesh parliamentary history.
Winding up the nearly 15-hour discussion on the motion that lasted till 0200 hours, prime minister Begum Khaleda 218 said people’s faith 17 her Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) was reflected the day they voted the party 10 Power” the 1991 general elections:
The motion, moved by the deputy leader of the opposition, Abdus Samad Azad, accused Begum Zia’s government of utter failure in protecting the life and property of the people in the face of sharply deteriorated law and order situation.
He also charged the government with failing to send back thousands of Myanmar refugees and prevent human rights violations in Chittagong Hill tracts.
