NEW DELHI: The Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao Monday ruled out the possibility of any reduction in the country Army and said training would have to be imparted to the people I confront any danger.

Addressing the annual Republic Day camp of NCC cadets here at parade grounds Rao said the number of National Cadet Corps in the country would be increased and more funds allocated to it in the Eighth Plan.

The Prime Minister said every. Citizen should be trained to face any “eventuality.”:

The Prime Minister said there was a tendency the world over to reduce standing Army and citizens were being trained. He however said “I do not think we will be able to reduce the Army but training will have to be given to people to face any danger.”

Rao said under the new education policy the government would emphasize the participation of youth in the NCC National Service Scheme or other sports activities.

Referring to NCC cadets the Prime Minister said “though you are neither an army of a paramilitary force you do give the people the feeling of Army by our fitness and sharp reflexes.” Rao complimented the NCC for its work and said it was “doing a great job” in preparing the youth of the country.

“The Prime Minister presented six best cadets awards o the boys and girls of senior and junior division Army Navy and Air Force wings of the NCC. The Prime Ministers inter directorate championship banner was presented to the NCC directorate Karanataka and Goa.
