ISLAMABAD, Nov. 30, Afghan President Najibullah announced an Amnesty on Monday freeing more than 5,000 prisoners from jail.

Najibullah announced the Amnesty decree in a speech broadcast live over the official Kabul radio, monitored in Islamabad, after a traditional grand assembly elected him President for a seven year term.

It was not immediately clear if the Amnesty would cover opponents of his Soviet backed government or ordinary prisoners.

The Kabul government has already released several thousand people under Amnesty after it launched a “*National Reconciliation” drive in January to end nine years of guerrilla war in the county.
