UNITED NATIONS Nov. 28 Reuter: The Security Council today adopted by consensus a resolution calling for new steps to tighten the U.N. arms embargo imposed on South Africa in 1977.

The resolution urged states to ensure that components of embargoed items do not reach the South African military and police through third countries and to prohibit the export of spare parts for embargoed aircraft and other military equipment belonging to South Africa. All states were urged to prohibit the export to South Africa of items they believe are destined for the military or police such as aircraft air-craft pairs and engines electronic equipment computers and four-wheel drive vehicles.

Calling for strict implementation of the arms embargo the resolution requested all states to refrain from any nuclear cooperation with Pretoria which would contribute to the manufacture and development of nuclear weapons.

The resolution further urged states to refrain from importing arms ammunition and military vehicles produced in South Africa in accordance with a council resolution adopted in 1984.

All states were called on to prohibit entry of South African armaments for display at international fairs and exhibitions and to end exchange visits by government personnel which would maintain or increase South Africa’s military or police capabilities.
