NEW DELHI: Opposition leaders told the speaker of the Lok Sabha during questioning on March 31 that disclosures of the withheld sections of the Thakkar Commission Report were highly embarrassing to the speaker and the government.
Rajiv Gandhi had released two out of five volumes of the report which was set up to investigate conspiracy to kill Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
The report pointed a “finger of suspicion” at R.K. Dhawan the then Special Assistant to Indira Gandhi who was recently appointed an Officer on Special Duty by Rajiv Gandhi.
Inderjit Gupta of the CPI said, “It would be embarrassing for you, Mr. Speaker if you accept that this is the complete report, because large extracts from the rest of the report are appearing every day in press,” he said referring to the two out of five volumes released by the government.
Madhu Dandwate (Janata Dal) added that what should be placed: on the table of the house is being placed on the table of the editor.
‘The speaker, Balram Jakhar said, he had referred the matter to the Attomey General. As dispute is whether what the government has placed before the house constitutes the full report of the Thakkar Commission or not, Jaipal Reddy (Janata Dal) said, “Are we supposed to get our information from the papers,” referring to the published extracts of the: withheld portions.
“I don’t know about this,” said Jakhar, “I have written to the Attorney General asking for his opinion. If he says the report (tabled so far is not complete, I will ask the government to put the rest of the report before the House.”
