BATALA: Thirty five people were killed when a bomb exploded in a Hindu religious procession. Over 200 were injured and have been rushed to hospitals in Chandigarh and Ludhiana.
Unidentified assailants came in an unnumbered Maruti van and exploded the bomb by remote control. No one has claimed responsibility for the blast. Elsewhere in the state there was a spate of violence in which twenty one people were killed according to the police. These included five CRPF jawans. The TV tower in Amritsar was severely damaged in a militant attack. Transmission equipment worth Rs 10 million is said to have been destroyed.
