Long live Khasla Spirit
Dear Editor,
Like many of my Sikh brothers, I have spent countless sleepless nights pondering the horrible events of the last few years in the Punjab, and the occurrences that have led to the present chaos.
Much has been said and written recently about this situation and the means to ‘resolve it. In spite of the rhetoric of normalcy instability still prevails in the region today. I am sure many of the comments and suggestions have been well meaning, but the bottom line is that we have gone nowhere.
Much blood has been shed, a community has been alienated. More importantly, faith in the governments’ ability to peacefully resolve the problem created by its’ unnecessary show of force and violence, has been lost completely. To top it off, the government has used and continues to use every dirty means available to discredit the Sikhs. In spite of this oppression Sikhs, even though a miniscule community, today are experiencing a worldwide religious resurgence.
The question may be asked “what has gone wrong and what can be done about it?” At the present time at least one thing is certain that the governments’ violent and strong-armed policy to crush this peace loving community has failed. The attempt to force a solution with the “Peace Accord” has backfired. Resistance persists and will continue with no end in sight.
I want to express one thing, as indicated by the recent events, that even though costly the positive actions of the Sikh youths have ignited a Khalsa spirit. I know I am speaking for those silent well-wishers when I say thank you to those young Sikhs who have made me walk with my head high again.
