CHANDIGARH: Militants blew up a jeep killing eight security personnel and injuring three others in Tarn Taran district a few hours before the new governor Surendra Nath was to visit Amritsar Thursday to pay obeisance at the holiest Sikh shrine the Golden Temple.

Of the eight security men killed in the blast seven were paramilitary central reserve police force (CRPF) personnel and one was a Punjab Police constable.

Police said the militants hurled bombs on the jeep near Ganga College and blew the vehicle to pieces.

Those killed have been identified as Sub Inspector Dewan Chand Naik M K Attal Lance-Naik Megh Raj Sein Constables Sultan Khan Haku Ram and Praveen Bhai (all from CRPF) and police constable Kulwant Singh.

Elsewhere in the state seven militants were among 10 people killed in incidents of violence Aug 8.

Police said two militants Daljit Singh alias Billa and Surinder alias Shinda committed suicide by consuming cyanide when they were stopped by a police patrol party near village Manapur in Amritsar district.
