NEW DELHI: A constitution bench of the country’s apex court upheld the validity of the Bhopal gas disaster (processing of claims) Act, 1985 confirming the $470 million settlement reached with the US based Union Carbide Corporation and its Indian subsidiary.

The much awaited judgment, on which depended the validity of the settlement arrived at on February 14, this year, was pronounced in a packed courtroom by the five judge bench headed by the Chief Justice, Mr Sabyasachi Mukharji.
