KUALA LUMPUR: Four Indian nationals have filed a suit in a magistrate’s court here for damages against their employer M Karupiah for alleged breach of contract, battery and wrongful confinement.

Palani, S. Natarajan, T.N Muniya and R. Ramasamy, from Indian southern state of Tamil Nadu, alleged that Karupiah failed to pay them proper wages and that he confiscated a sum of 3,200 Rupees from each one of them.

The four came to Malaysia on a tourist visa in January 1984 and were offered jobs in a factory owned by the defendant who also offered to send 4,000 rupees to each of their families in India besides paying them their monthly wages.

They said in their suit that they were forced to work 12 hours a day and were confined to a small room in the factory to prevent their escape.

The defendant however denied the charges and said that the plaintiffs had no right to sue him in Malaysia as they had violated the law of the land by seeking employment while on a social visit.

Hearing of the case has been posted to January 16.
